HIH Celebrates Guyana’s Cricketing Legacy with Launch of History of Cricket in Guyana, Volume III
The Hand-in-Hand Mutual Fire Insurance Company Limited proudly reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Guyana’s rich sporting and cultural heritage with the launch of History of Cricket in Guyana, Volume III (1915–1923): No Silver Lining Yet, authored by distinguished historian Professor Clem Seecharan.
Held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the historic Georgetown Cricket Club, Bourda, the occasion brought together distinguished representatives of government, the cricketing fraternity, academia, the business community, and specially invited guests for an evening of reflection, scholarship, and national pride.
The event was dedicated to the cherished memory of the late Dr. Ian McDonald, whose remarkable vision, passion for cricket, and longstanding association with Hand-in-Hand were instrumental in inspiring this significant literary undertaking.
Two Enduring Legacies, One Remarkable Historical Connection
The year 1865 holds particular significance in the histories of both Hand-in-Hand and Guyanese cricket. It marked the establishment of the Company and the dawn of first-class cricket in Guyana, when Demerara hosted Barbados in the country’s inaugural first-class match at Parade Ground, Georgetown.
More than 160 years later, this remarkable historical connection lends deeper meaning to Hand-in-Hand’s continued commitment to documenting the evolution of cricket and preserving the stories, achievements, and traditions that have helped shape Guyana’s national identity.
An Evening of Distinguished Reflections and Tributes
The evening’s proceedings were graciously guided by Mr. Paul Braam, Hand-in-Hand’s Legal and Compliance Officer, who served as Master of Ceremonies.
Opening the programme, the Company’s Chairman, Mr. John Carpenter, paid a moving tribute to Dr. Ian McDonald, reflecting on his extraordinary contributions to literature, cricket, and the intellectual and cultural life of Guyana and the wider Caribbean. His remarks honoured Dr. McDonald’s enduring association with Hand-in-Hand and his unwavering dedication to preserving the history and achievements that define the nation’s heritage.
Hand-in-Hand Director, Mr. Paul Chan-A-Sue, subsequently introduced Professor Seecharan, highlighting his distinguished academic career and invaluable contributions to Caribbean historical scholarship.
In an address marked by gratitude and reflection, Professor Seecharan recalled the origins of the History of Cricket in Guyana series, acknowledging Dr. McDonald’s foresight and encouragement in bringing the project to life as part of Hand-in-Hand’s 150th anniversary commemorations in 2015. What began as an ambitious historical vision has since evolved into an enduring literary contribution, offering invaluable insights into cricket’s development and its profound relationship with Guyanese society.
Looking ahead, Professor Seecharan announced that research was already underway for Volume IV, the fourth and final installment of the series. The forthcoming publication will bring this extensive historical undertaking to its anticipated conclusion, further enriching the documented legacy of Guyanese cricket and fulfilling the vision that inspired the project more than a decade ago.
Professor Seecharan also extended special appreciation to Hand-in-Hand’s Marketing Manager, Ms. Savita Singh, recognizing her dedication, meticulous planning, and invaluable coordination in bringing the launch to fruition.
Cricket, Scholarship, and National Identity
The evening’s distinguished guest speaker, renowned cricket commentator and historian Dr. Joseph “Reds” Perreira, was introduced by Hand-in-Hand’s Managing Director, Mr. Omadatt Singh.
In his compelling feature address, Dr. Perreira commended Professor Seecharan’s exceptional scholarship, painstaking research, and dedication to documenting an invaluable chapter of Guyana’s history. Reflecting on cricket’s far-reaching influence on the nation’s social development, cultural identity, and collective consciousness, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that this knowledge remains accessible to future generations.
Of particular significance was his appeal to the University of Guyana to consider introducing the history of cricket in Guyana as a subject of academic study. His recommendation underscored the importance of recognizing cricket not merely as a sport, but as an integral part of the country’s historical, social, and cultural development.
The occasion was further distinguished by the presence of the Honourable Charles Ramson Jr., Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, whose insightful remarks reinforced the importance of safeguarding Guyana’s cricketing history and celebrating the remarkable achievements of those who helped shape it.
The Minister reflected on cricket’s extraordinary ability to unite Guyanese across generations and communities, fostering a shared sense of identity, unity, and national pride. He also recognized the exceptional talent, accomplishments, and enduring contributions of former Guyanese cricketers, emphasizing the importance of preserving their achievements as a source of inspiration for generations to come.
His reflections highlighted the significance of historical publications such as Professor Seecharan’s work in ensuring that the accomplishments and experiences of the nation’s sporting pioneers remain an enduring part of Guyana’s cultural inheritance.
A ceremonial presentation of books followed, symbolizing Hand-in-Hand’s continued dedication to advancing historical knowledge and sharing the nation’s literary and sporting heritage.
Bringing the formal proceedings to a gracious close, Mrs. Zaida Joaquin, Hand-in-Hand’s Human Resources and Administration Manager, delivered the vote of thanks. She expressed sincere appreciation to Professor Seecharan, the distinguished speakers, invited dignitaries, representatives of the cricketing fraternity, and all whose presence and contributions enriched the occasion.
Preserving Our Heritage for Future Generations
For Hand-in-Hand, Guyana’s longest-established property insurer, the History of Cricket in Guyana series represents far more than corporate sponsorship. It reflects the Company’s enduring relationship with the nation it has proudly served since 1865 and its belief that preserving the past is an essential investment in the future.
Through Professor Seecharan’s meticulous research and compelling historical narrative, the series pays lasting tribute to the pioneers, defining moments, and extraordinary achievements that shaped Guyanese cricket, while illuminating the wider social and cultural circumstances that influenced the game’s evolution.
