On Friday November 10th, 2018, the Georgetown Cricket Club pavilion was packed with current and former national and West Indies cricketers, administrators, political figures, members of the diplomatic corps and special invitees, all special guests of Hand-in-Hand Mutual Fire and Life Insurance Companies as they launched the “Hand-in-Hand History of Cricket in Guyana, 1898-1914 Volume 2: A Stubborn Mediocrity” written by Professor Clem Seecharan.
In an evening filled with enlightenment of the rich history of cricket in Guyana, guests were welcomed by Mr. John Carpenter, Chairman, Hand-in-Hand Group of Companies. Professor Clem Seecharan was introduced by Dr. Ian Mc. Donald, Director. In his address, he mentioned that Guyanese Cricket is inseparable from events beyond the boundary. He also proudly expressed his gratitude to Hand-in-Hand Group of Companies for giving him the privilege to bring to fruition this fascinating aspect of the life of our country.
Addresses were also made by former West Indian Cricketer Mr. Roger Harper and Mr. Lancelot Richard Gibbs. The Honourable Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton, in his address said that the books help us to appreciate the importance of cricket in Guyana. He noted that very few cricket lovers understand where we came from and applauded that company and the author for conceiving and bringing to life a project that highlights to our rich history with the game.
Director Howard Cox served as Master of Ceremonies for the night while Sales Manager, Ms. Shanomae Baptiste gave the vote of thanks.
The night ended with guests receiving an autographed copy of the cricket book, presentations to the National Archives of Guyana, University of Guyana, the National Trust and the National Library along with refreshments being served wile guest mingled with author.
